Juneau, Alaska
Juneau is surrounded by water and mountains. Many of my pictures were taken on our near
Christmas 1993. The sunsets were always beautiful and the weather in the fall was
magnificent. September had beautiful days almost all month. October was at the other
extreme and had endless clouds and drizzle. In those dark days of late fall and winter I
looked forward to scenes such as these of the inside passage and the inlets around Juneau.
This is of Auke Lake, one of my favorite picture spots which frequently had beautiful sunsets.
Just north of Auke Lake is the area we often called "out the road"
because it was sparsely populated and was both scenic and wild. This view of the inside
passage is a sample of what we frequently saw. It is similar to where we once went fishing
at the home of a Rusty Moore. He was a professional animal trainer and while fishing one
day we saw a humpback whale in the inlet playing. We also had a chance to feed his pet
porcupine, by holding an apple in our mouths and he hate it out. Unfortunately these are
pictures that I lost in my fire as pictured below.
One unfortunate event came as I traveled to Whitehorse in the Yukon
territory of Canada for a Zone Conference. We were staying with the LeCheminants and while
we were at church on Sunday a fire broke out in the room we were staying in. The burnt out
bed is the one I was sleeping in during our stay. It folded up against the wall where
there was a light bulb. The switch was mounted upside down and when the bed was folded as
we rushed to church the light was left on and a blanket from the bed got wrapped around
the light. The room we were in was gone as was the adjacent room. Smoke damage was
everywhere but no one was hurt and every one took it rather well. Of my things that I had
in the room the only thing I was worried about was my journal. Aside from being
waterlogged it was fine. A little blow drying and some careful attention and I continued
to use it until it was full a few months later. The fire did destroy my camera, along with
4 rolls of film. I lost all of the pictures from my trip down to Juneau from Fairbanks.
The beauty of that trip is now unfortunately only in my memories.
